John Green: The Fault in Our Stars

I didn't really know what to except of this book. People are praising The Fault in Our Stars all over the internet, but I was at least suspicious 'cause usually young adult novels are not for me. After the hype went on and on I decided I should find out why this book has touched so many people.

But first I had to find out that finding this book was not as easy as I had thought because it had become so popular. Luckily they had it in one local bookstore so I bought a paperback copy in English. It says "You laugh, you cry, and then you come back for more" in the cover. I still doubted if I would be all heartbroken after reading the lovestory of Hazel and Augustus.

Hazel is a sixteen-year-old girl who has terminal cancer. Her mother insists that Hazel should join a support group. Hazel doesn't like the idea but she doesn't have a choice. In the support group she befriends with a boy named Isaac who is as fed up with the support group as she is. They communicate through sighs while others tell stories about fighting and battling and winning and shrinking and scanning.

After a few weeks of sighing in meetings a new handsome boy shows up in the support group. Augustus is survivor of osterosarcoma and came to support his friend Isaac who discovered he will lose his sight soon. After the meeting Augustus invites Hazel to his place to watch a movie. Augustus agrees to read Hazels favorite book, An Imperal Affliction which is a book about cancer without being a cancerbook. Later on this made-up novel has a big role in the story. The ending of book puzzles Hazel and August so much that they are willing to travel across the world to solve it. Hazel doesn't want affection 'cause she's afraid of leaving people heartbroken after she dies.

One thing I usually don't like about young adult novels is young adults in them. Often they are rebellious teenagers who feel suddenly so grown up. Then they do some adult stuff like drugs. (Okay, this is not the plot pattern in every single young adult book but still.) I guess the problem is I can't identify with the protagonist. But this time I couldn't help feeling empathy. Maybe it happened because this wasn't a book about being a teenager or having cancer (or being a teenager and having cancer). This book is about love. It is a beautiful love story.

I also liked Hazel's attitude towards cancer. She had accepted that she's going to die and she can joke about her disease. Augustus is really optimistic and romantic. I liked these characters and how cancer didn't determine who they are.

John Green did good job describing the pain of losing. That's the part where I couldn't help crying. He didn't only tell how characters felt, he made me feel it too.

This book surprised me. I loved it so I also went to see the movie! I recommend this book for you if you want to experience a heartbreaking lovestory.

Luin itse kirjasta englannin kielisen alkuperäisversion, joten arvioni ei käsittele suomennostyötä. En oikeen tiennyt, mitä odottaa tältä kirjalta. Tätä kirjaa on ylistetty laajasti internetissä, mutta itse olin hiukan epäileväinen, sillä en yleensä välitä nuorten kirjoista. Kirjan suosio kuitenkin kasvoi ja kasvoi, joten en malttanut olla selvittämättä, mikä liikuttaa niin monia ihmisiä.

Ensiksi sain kuitenkin huomata, ettei tämän kirjan löytäminen ole ihan helppoa suosionsa vuoksi. Lopulta tiemme kohtasivat onneksi paikallisessa Suomalaisessa, josta ostin englannin kieliset pokkariversiot sekä tästä kirjasta että Looking For Alaskasta kesälukemiseksi. Kirjan kannessa tarinaa ylistettiin vuolaasti, mutta epäilin edelleen särkisikö se minun sydämeni.

Hazel on 16-vuotias tyttö, joka sairastaa parantumatonta syöpää. Hänen äitinsä vaatii Hazelia osallistumaan tukiryhmään. Hazel ei pidä ajatuksesta, mutta hänellä ei ole vaihtoehtoja. Tukiryhmässä hän ystävystyy Isaaciin, joka on yhtä kyllästynyt tukiryhmään kuin hänkin. He kommunikoivat huokauksilla muiden kertoessa tarinoita taistelemisesta, voittamisesta, kutistumisesta ja skannauksista.

Kun huokailua tukiryhmässä on kulunut muutama viikko, komea poika ilmaantuu kokoukseen. Augustus on selättänyt osteosarkooman ja tuli ryhmään tukemaan ystäväänsä Isaacia, joka sai kuulla menettävänsä näkönsä pian. Kokouksen jälkeen Augustus kutsuu Hazelin luokseen katsomaan elokuvaa. Hän myös lupautuu lukemaan Hazelin suosikkikirjan Viistoa valoa, joka kertoo syövästä olematta syöpäkirja. Myöhemmin tällä kuvitteellisella kirjalla on suuri rooli tarinassa. Kirjan loppu askarruttaa Hazelia ja Augustusta niin paljon, että he ovat valmiita matkustamaan toiselle puolelle maailmaa selvittääkseen sen.

Nuorten kirjoissa minua ärsyttävät yleensä kirjassa kuvatut nuoret. He ovat usein kapinallisia teinejä, jotka kokevat yhtäkkiä olevansa todella aikuisia. Tämän jälkeen he alkavat tutustua aikuisten elämään esimerkiksi huumeiden kautta. Luultavasti ongelma on siinä, etten samaistu kirjan hahmoihin. Tällä kertaa en kuitenkaan voinut olla tuntematta empatiaa. Ehkä se johtui siitä, koska tämä kirja ei kerro teininä olemisesta eikä syöpäpotilaana olemisesta. Tämä kirja kertoo rakkaudesta. Se on kahden nuoren kaunis rakkaustarina.

Pidin myös Hazelin asenteesta sairauttaan kohtaan. Hän oli hyväksynyt kuolemansa ja pystyi vitsailemaan syövästä. August taas oli romanttinen sekä optimistinen. Pidin näistä henkilöhahmoista ja siitä, kuinka syöpä ei määrittänyt heidän luonnettaan.

John Green on onnistui kuvailemaan menettämisen tuskaa todella hyvin. Minäkään en voinut olla itkemättä. Hän ei ainoastaan kertonu, kuinka hahmot tunsivat vaan sai minutkin tuntemaan.

Tämä kirja yllätti minut. Ihastuin siihen niin, että kävin katsomassa myös elokuvan. Suosittelisin kirjaa niille, jotka kaipaavat sydäntäsärkevää rakkaustarinaa.

Tätä kirjaa tahkosinkin pitkän aikaa (tosin tätä postausta kirjoitin vielä pidemmän aikaa). Kyseessä on siis Anne Ricen Vampyyrikronikat-sarjan viides osa. Tätä kirjaa ei ole suomennettu, mutta arvostelen sen nyt lyhyesti suomeksikin.

Monet fanit ovat sitä mieltä, että kirjojen taso laskee nopeasti kolmannen tai neljännen osan jälkeen. Itse en ole kuitenkaan ollut erityisen pettynyt neljänteen tai viidenteen osaan. Ehkä tämän viidennen lopetus ei ollut niin vahva kuin aiempien, mutta kirja oli muilta osin mukaansatempaava ja jännittävä.

Kirjasarjan tässä osassa vampyyri Lestat tapaa itse paholaisen. Lestat kokee jonkun vakoilevan häntä samalla, kun hän itse tarkkailee seuraavaa uhriaan. Lestat on nimittäin seurannut pitkän aikaa huumediileriä sekä hänen tytärtään, joka on TV-saarnaaja. Murhattuaan uhrinsa Lestat tutustuu tämän tyttäreen Doraan sekä saa mielenkiintoisen ehdotuksen paholaiselta, joka haluaa tulla kutsutuksi nimellä Memnoch. Memnoch pyytää Lestatilta palvelusta ja lupaa näyttää tälle taivaan ja helvetin. Tietysti Lestat lähtee mukaan seikkailuun, ja paholainen kertoo hänelle kaiken maailmankaikkeuden synnystä. He näkevät jopa omin silmin Jumalan pojan ristiin naulitsemisen. Tämä kirja kertoo ennen kaikkea Lestatista, muut vampyyrit ovat enemmän tai vähemmän sivuosassa.

Mielestäni kirjan juoni ei ollut erityisen hyvin rakennettu, mutta Ricen mahtava kerronta piti minut lumoissaan siitä huolimatta. Kiinnostavinta kirjassa oli uskonnollinen lähtökohta. Toisaalta jotkin lukijat eivät ole pitäneet kristinuskon esille tuomisesta. Anne Rice kertoo omanlaisensa ja hyvin mielenkiintoisen version maailmankaikkeuden synnystä, evoluutiosta, Jeesuksesta, taivaasta ja helvetistä sekä Jumalasta ja paholaisesta eli Memnochista.

It took me quite a long time to finish this book and even longer to finish this review. I read the fifth part of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles.

I hear that Anne Rice fans think that this series gets worse after the third or the fourth book. I can't say I was disappointed with these books. Perhaps the ending in this book was not that good, but otherwise it was exciting and spellbinding.

In this part vampire Lestat meets the Devil. Lestat feels someone is stalking him while he is stalking his next victim, a drug dealer called Roger. Lestat is obsessed with this victim and his daughter, Dora, who is televangelist. After murdering Roger Lestat makes friends with Dora and meets the Devil. Devil, who wants to be called Memnoch has an interesting proposition for Lestat. Memnoch asks for a favor and wants to show Lestat Heaven and Hell. This is how the adventure begins. Lestat will learn everything about the creation of the Universe. He will also see himself the crucifixion of Christ. This book is all about Lestat, the other vampires appear briefly.

In my opinion, the plot leaves a lot to wish for but Anne Rice's amazing narrative really compensates anything. Religious starting point is very interesting though some readers won't agree with this. Anne Rice creates his own version of the creation of Universe, evolution, Christ, Heaven and Hell and God and Devil.

       Anne Rice on tullut tunnetuksi etenkin goottiromaaneistaan, jotka ovat vaikuttaneet suuresti kyseiseen alakulttuuriin. The Tale of the Body Thief kuuluu kymmenosaiseen Vampyyrikronikat-sarjaan. Sen ensimmäinen osa, Veren vangit (Interview with the Vampire) julkaistiin vuonna 1976.
       Veren vangit nousi nopeasti ilmestymisensä jälkeen kulttisuosioon. Kirjassa Louis-niminen vampyyri kertoo elämästään reportterille. Hän aloittaa kertomuksensa 1700-luvulta, jolloin hän oli vielä kuolevainen ihminen. Louis on rikas plantaasinomistaja Louisianassa. Hänen elämänsä muuttuu, kun hän kohtaa vampyyri Lestatin. Tämä muuttaa Louisin vampyyriksi, joka joutuu kamppailla verenhimonsa ja moraalikysymysten kanssa. Myöhemmin Lestat muuttaa vampyyriksi myös vasta viisivuotiaan Claudian, joka on kolmas tärkeä päähenkilö kirjasarjan ensimmäisessä osassa. Kirjojen tapahtumia ja henkilöhahmoja ymmärtää parhaiten, jos ne lukee kronologisessa järjestyksessä. Ne ovat kuitenkin juonen kannalta erillisiä kertomuksia. Sarjan kolme ensimmäistä teosta on suomennettu.

Juoni

       Lestat kokee vampyyrina olemisen taakkana ja ahdistuu tekemästään pahuudesta. Hän yrittää tappaa ainoastaan pahoja ihmisiä, murhaajia ja muita rikollisia, mutta tuntee silti syyllisyyttä. Lestat on yksinäinen ja etääntynyt muista vampyyreista. Yksi hänen harvoista ystävistään on David Tabolt, 74-vuotias kuolevainen. David ei halua ryhtyä vampyyriksi ollakseen Lestatin kanssa ikuisesti. Masentuneena Lestat haluaa päättää ikuisen elämänsä ja suuntaa Gobin aavikolle auringonnousun aikaan. Hän kuitenkin selviää auringon paahteesta ja palaa Davidin luokse.
       Lestatia alkaa seurata salaperäinen nuori mies, Raglan James. Lestat kiinnostuu, kun ymmärtää, että tämä mies osaa siirtyä toiseen ruumiiseen ja haluaa vaihtaa omansa Lestatin kanssa. Lestat suostuu vaihtoon huolimatta monista varoituksen sanoista. Ihmiselämä ei ole kuitenkaan sellaista kuin hän toivoi. Raglan James katoaa Lestatin vampyyrikehossa ja jättää Lestatin kokemaan kaikki kamaluudet, jotka hän on ihmiselämästä unohtanut.

Tyyli

     Anne Ricen kirjoitustyyliä on kuvailtu täyteläiseksi, jota se todella on. Sanojen runsaus ilmenee etenkin lukiessa teoksia alkuperäiskielellä. Kirjan juoni etenee paikoin hitaasti monisanaisen ja perusteellisen kuvailun takia. Sarjan hahmot heräätävät eloon tarkan kerronnan ja mielikuvituksen avulla. Rice kuvailee vampyyrien tuntemuksia niin elävästi, että voisi kuvitella hänen itsekin imeneen verta jonkun kaulavaltimosta. Kuvaus illasta, jolloin Lestat herää Davidin luota yritettyään tappaa itsensä Gobin aavikolla:
       "I closed my eyes and listened. Snow falling on the roof, snow tumbling down into the chimney. I opened my eyes again and saw the gleaming bits of moisture on the logs.
       Then I concentrated, and felt the energy leap out from me like a long thin tongue and touch the kindling, which burst at once into tiny dancing flames. The thick crusted surface of the logs began to warm and then blister. The fire was on its way.
       I felt a sudden flush of exquisite pain in my cheeks and on my forehead as the light grew brighter. Interesting. I climbed to my knees and stood up, alone in the room. I looked at the brass lamp beside David's chair. With a tiny soundless mental twist, I turned it on." 

      Kirja jättää mietteliääksi. Onko ihmisen sielu irrallinen, erillään ruumiista? Entä jos voisimme vaihtaa ruumista, jossa elämme? 

Translation

Background information

    Anne Rice is known for her gothic novels, which have had a great effect on the subculture. The Tale of the Body Thief is a part of the Vampire Chronicles. The first part of series, Interview with the Vampire was published in 1976.
       The Interview with the Vampire became a cult book shortly after releasing. In the book a vampire called Louis tells about his life to a reporter. His tale begins in the 1800th century, when he was still a mortal man. Louis was a rich plantation owner in Louisiana. His life changed, when he met vampire Lestat. Lestat turns Louis into a vampire, who needs to fight with his blood thirst and moral questions. Later Lestat turns a five-year-old girl, Claudia into vampire Claudian. She is third important protagonist in this book. The book tells about Louis's psychical dilemmas and Claudia's desire to grow old. Interview with the Vampire was made into a film in 1994.
       The Tale of the Body Thief is the fourth part of the Vampire Chronicles. The second and the third books tell about adventures of Lestat, as well as the fourth one. You'll understand the events of the books best if you read them in chronological order. Their plots are however separate stories.

Plot

       The burden of being vampire is weighing upon Lestat and he is desperate because of the evil things he has done. He tries to kill evil people alone, for example murderers and other criminals, but he still feels guilty. Lestat is lonely and distant from other vampires. One of his few friends is David Tabolt, 74-year-old mortal. David doesn't want to turn into a vampire to be with Lestat forever. Depressed Lestat wants to end his everlasting life and heads to the Gobi desert. He survives from sunshine and returns to David.
       A mysterious young man, Raglan James starts to follow Lestat. Lestat becomes interested, when he understands that this man knows how to move from a body to another and wants to change his own with Lestat. Lestat agrees to switch despite many warnings. Human life isn't as brilliant as he hoped. Raglan James disappears in Lestat's body. Lestat has to experience all the horrors of mortal life, which he had already forgotten.

Style

     Anne Rice's writing style has often been described as rich. The plot progresses slowly because of the verbose and profound description. The characters come to life thansk to precise narrative and readers' imagination. Rice describes vampires' feelings so vividly that you could believe she is a vampire herself. Extract from evening, when Lestat wakes up at Davids' after attempting suicide:
       "I closed my eyes and listened. Snow falling on the roof, snow tumbling down into the chimney. I opened my eyes again and saw the gleaming bits of moisture on the logs.

     The book arouses many questions. Is human soul loose, seperate from body? And what if we could change our bodies?
